Sometimes I get annoyed at myself when I’m tired Sometimes I get annoyed at myself when I’m tired. Other times I’m frustrated with life itself for making me tired. And then, of course, there is the kind of tired that makes me worried because I think something must be wrong. I get tired and I resist the fact that I’m tired, and from the outside looking in, all that effort is like saying no to medicine when we’re sick.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ No matter what you’re moving through, when deep healing is underfoot you can expect to feel all kinda of ways. But the most common sensation is just being tired as heck.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We spend so much of our time trying *not* to be tired, preemptively loading up on adaptogens or drinking coffee, that we forget how sacred and important tiredness is.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re tired, nothing is wrong with you, your body is just telling you it’s time for healing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tiredness says: slow down and let rest in. Tiredness says: you have been doing so very much, even if you can’t see it on the surface.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tiredness says: you’ve done all you can for the time being, wider forces are here to sweep in and help you with your healing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tiredness says: All you’ve got to do is let go and be.
No matter what climate we live in, we all have the No matter what climate we live in, we all have the tendency to overschedule and inadvertently create drought-times for our spirit. Like one day of blue skies after another, we feel guilty not getting things done. We worry that we are wasting our life if we don’t use every hour constructively. Though many things may get accomplished during these strict days of endless sunshine, without a rainy day every once in a while, our spirit, like our flower gardens, can begin to wither. Gift yourself a rainy day. Perhaps this evening or ‪tomorrow morning‬. Close the drapes, put on the soundtrack of rain. Let the relaxation of non-doing soak all the way down to the roots and replenish your spirit again. . . What would your ideal rainy day look like? Would it be full of knitting or movie marathons? Or perhaps baking a batch of oatmeal cookies and stretching out with a good book? Close your eyes now (just for a moment) and ask your body and spirit what it would like to do on this rain holiday. Let me know what came up for you, and then, if you can, find a time to give yourself the gift of this replenishment.
A moment of blessed balance⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today the light and dark are equal. The day and night at peace. It is a day of sacred rest. A moment of having two feet on the ground. A time when we can feel the equilibrium within settle, like seawater under the moon. Or the last wildflowers of dusk. Balance is a rare and precious facet in nature, and in the nature of a life. It is a moment on the journey, rather than a destination. A sacred reprieve, like cool autumn winds. A balm that says, “keep going. There is no fall so great, that we will not catch you. You are held in equal love on all sides.” Blessed Mabon dear ones. May today’s balance bring strength to all your hearts.
Recently I took a trip to Maine to visit loved one Recently I took a trip to Maine to visit loved ones and be with the ocean. In the midst of a coastal heat wave, my dear friend @sylviavlinsteadt took me to her favorite dipping spot on the shore. Tucked into a small cove, the water was bath-warm from the sun. A shallow bed of kelp stretched out as far as the eye could see. Escaping the day's heat, I waded gratefully into the waves. Laying like a starfish in the great hip of the ocean, I rested among the moving kelp beneath me, their sway holding the sway of the sea. I closed my eyes and I let myself be buoyed, lifted and rocked by the wave’s embrace as it moved through the gentle sea greens, as it moved through me. It was blissful. If only for a few moments, I let go of everything but the desire to experience this weightlessness. The undetermined future. The sensational experience of being. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mystery, I think, can be like this… if only we let it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As life continues to hand us more mysteries, we can meet them as companions. Invite them in for tea. Because you may not always be able to see the bigger picture... but the mystery can. Just beyond your knowing is a wider vision for your life, one that is suffused with more benevolence and love than you can imagine. All you have to do is let go and trust the warm ocean moving beneath you— holding you up as you sway.
When we approach the unknown for what it is, a ben When we approach the unknown for what it is, a benevolence as deep as the ocean and as inconceivably full of life, we open ourselves to the blessing of being cared for by a wisdom beyond our knowing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we stop trying to hold on to life so tightly, we give the universe the opportunity to hold us. In the process, mystery ceases to be something we struggle against. Instead, it becomes a place where we can rest.
In Taoism, the mystery is the birthplace of realit In Taoism, the mystery is the birthplace of reality. That oceanic void out of which all things arise. In Buddhism this mysterious “no-thingness” is called śūnyatā and is seen as the place of pure, unmanifest potential. In the west we refer to our most ancient and esoteric practices as “the mysteries.” Entire mystery schools were founded as a way to teach profound paths to the divine.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All the most beautiful things in life are, at their heart, a mystery. Birth, love, magic, miracles. We struggle to embrace mystery because, well, it’s just so mysterious. But all along mystery has never stopped embracing us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This, I think, is what the ancient sages meant when they said that mystery is our beloved. Mystery is like the soil of the earth, the dark of the stars. It is an origin-place that is always with us, a force that is paired with our soul. To say “I don’t know” is one of the wisest things you can ever admit, because mystery is the place of deep knowing from which we come, and to which we will one day return.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Feeling the sacred call to mystery in your life?
